Breast Augmentation Safety

Breast augmentation, as with any invasive surgery contains some inherent risk. These risks are minimal when the surgery is performed by a certified (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons) plastic surgeon in an accredited surgical facility.  Breast augmentation is indeed one of the safest and most routinely performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the world.

The majority of safety concerns regarding breast augmentation surgery revolve around the breast implants in case of a rupture. In the past there has been a great deal of discussions about silicone filled breast implants. Some of these discussions raised the possibility of a link between ruptured silicone breast implants and breast cancer. However, with no evidence of this linkage ever produced, FDA and Health Canada have re-approved the use of silicone and gel filled breast implants.

These concerns, however, don’t come into play at all with saline (salt-water filled) breast implants in which case the saline is reabsorbed into the body as a natural process in case of rupture.
