Types of Breast Implants

Choosing the appropriate breast implant types can often become overwhelming for many patients. There are a number of different variables to consider: size, shape, texture, and volume. Dr Rice’s patients often express relief that Dr Rice is highly experienced with breast augmentation and is able to guide them toward the right choice.

Texture

All breast implants have a surrounding shell, which can vary in texture. This feeling can be either smooth or have a defined texture to it that can be slightly rough or bumpy. The shells can also vary in thickness and can be filled with saline or silicone gel, which are the two main types of breast implants approved by Health Canada.

Filling Type

Saline Implants

Saline implants have a silicone shell which is filled with salt-water. Saline breast implants can be filled to a predefined volume of saline according to desired specifications.

Silicone Gel Implants

The cohesive gel implants contain silicone gel also known as gummy bear implants which generally provides a slightly more natural feel. Silicone gel implants are the most commonly used type of breast implants in Canada.

Shapes

Breast implants are available in two main shapes: round and anatomical (tear-drop) shaped. Anatomical implants are available only in the silicone gel variety. The selection of round versus anatomical breast implants is dependant upon several factors including preference, pre-existing breast tissue, and position of the nipple. The right implant can only be chosen with a consultation on an individual basis.
