Breast Augmentation Incision Placement

Selecting the incision site for breast augmentation is dependant upon a number of factors including personal preference, implant type and body type. Dr Rice with consult with each patient personally and help decide the appropriate individual plan. Below is a brief list of possible incision sites for breast augmentation.

Inframmary

A common incision placement is in the inframmary fold, which is basically an incision made under the crease of the breast.  There are many advantages to this incision, such as:

  • The implant can be placed and removed either over, partially under or completely under the breast muscle.
  • More control over the implant placement, thus, making for better results.
  • There are lesser chances for bacterial infection and, hence, complications.
  • The scar is very well hidden.

Areola

Another breast augmentation incision placement is the areola incision.  Basically, an incision is made at the edge of the areola (nipple), which is the darker area of the skin surrounding the nipple.  Since the incision is made at the point where the darkest and lightest skins of the breast meet, the resulting scar is almost invisible.   A medical advantage of the areola incision is that all types of implants can be placed either over the muscle or in a partial or total sub-muscular.  Plus, the breast implants can also be removed via the same incision.

Transaxillary

Also called the transax in medical circles, the incision site is made in the natural folds of the armpit. An endoscope may be used to insert the breast implant. This type of breast augmentation incision placement is preferred because of the potential for well hidden scars.
